FIRST Tech Challenge
For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) was founded by the inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen in 1988. Woodie Flowers, a physicist and retired MIT professor, was an assistance in this finding. Kamen was inspired to start FIRST when he saw how few kids considered careers in the STEM field. On top of that, very few women and minorities had interest as well. He wanted to make an organization that would thoroughly capture students’ attention and interest. In order to accomplish that goal, he decided to combine science and technology and the excitement of a sports competition.
The international high school robotics competition is called FIRST Robotics Competition. Each year during a 6-week period, teams of students and mentors build a robot. Each game changes yearly in order to keep the excitement fresh. Teams are given a standard set of parts, and are are also allowed to have budget. FIRST Robotics team is built on two values: gracious professionalism and cooperation. Gracious professionalism truly embraces the competition as inherent in the program while maintaining respect for opponents and allies. Cooperation is a critical aspect of gracious professionalism, as it's important to be able to work with other teams on the fly. The overall goal of FTC is to truly inspire students to be science and technology leaders.
